What can be done to stop unwanted barking?

The first and most important step is to properly identify the cause. Barking is a perfectly normal dog behavior and dogs bark for many reasons. However, excessive or nuisance barking may be due to boredom or loneliness. For some dogs, it is a "learned" behavior, reinforced and rewarded with attention or treats that owners mistakenly think will pacify the dog. Determine the events that trigger nuisance barking and remedy the situation. If that is not possible, a bark control device may be an option. Although Bark Control Systems are generally very effective, exercise and obedience are still needed on a daily basis. Physical and mental exhaustion often curtail barking habits and the no bark collars can finish the job!

How effective are bark collars?

As a professional dog trainer I have been suggesting that my clients use bark collars for over 10 years now. When used properly bark collars are extremely effective! The key to having success with bark control devices is taking the right steps, picking the collar that best suits your dog and reading the manual carefully. The dog learns to avoid barking because a sound or stimulus happens when he does bark. The only thing missing from making a bark collar/device perfect is a high value reward for not barking…and that is where you come in. If you dog would normally bark in a certain situation and this time he chooses not to, be sure to reward that good behavior. Maybe a treat, a little love or throw the ball for him to take advantage of that positive moment. If you reinforce the good quiet behaviors and the bark control device helps you correct the bad behaviors, you will no longer have a barking problem.

What bark control products are available?

There are a variety of different bark control collars for dogs, actually anti bark collars for dogs are one of the most sold pet products out there!

Tone Stimulus Collars detect barking and emit a safe but unpleasant sound to stop your dog from continuing to bark. I have found that Ultra Sonic or Tone Stimulus devices are very effective in mild to moderate barking cases but not generally best suited for stubborn dogs with excessive barking issues.

Citronella Collars detect barking and emit a safe, effective but unpleasant spray of citronella towards your dogs nose. The combination of the sound, smell and taste is enough for most dogs to stop barking. However, with some stubborn barkers this too isn’t quite enough. Spray no bark collars or Citronella Bark Collars or a great option for those owners that are opposed to electronic stimulus or for dogs that have presented sensitivity to any type of water/spray bottle correction in the past.

Stimulation Bark Collars detect barking and emit a static electronic correction. The stimulus is unpleasant but not painful and can be very effective for that stubborn barker. Also, many of these types of bark collars are durable and water proof. Review the individual product description to read more about each brand and see which one best fits your needs.

Are bark collars safe?

Yes they are! Bark Collars are used by tens of thousands of pet owners every day and I too have used them on my own dogs and my client’s dogs for years. Keep in mind, you pay for what you get so I always advise my clients to spend a bit more to get a quality bark control device!
