Getting the most out of your dog bed! Whether you have a plush dog bed, a pet cot, a heated pet bed or a cooling dog bed, dog beds aren’t just a comfy place for your dog to lie down – Read the helpful article below.

The “Place” or “Bed” Command

The “Place” or “Bed” command is a great behavior to teach your dog!

I personally find the "Place" command to be one of the most useful obedience commands and use it at home with my dog’s everyday. It has some many uses and can avoid a lot of another negative behaviors.

When guests arrive at your home, instead of your dogs getting over excited and jumping all over guests you can issue the "Place” command and redirect their focus to something good. This will not only teach them proper house manners and how to greet people calmly but will avoid the whole jumping issue, therefore never allowing them the opportunity to learn that negative behavior.

If your dog likes to beg for food or attention, simply give the command and once you have taught the cue and reinforced it your dog will lay on his dog bed and allow you to eat dinner in peace.

This command also helps graduate to the next step with housebreaking. Maybe your dog has proven to be reliable in the crate and has been doing well with using outside as the potty area. Now it is time to allow a bit more freedom without giving too much at once…use the bed instead of the crate. Allow him some free time in the home after a successful potty break and then after a little while send him to his bed. This way you know where he is and he is staying out of trouble and not using your home as a toilet. Most dogs won’t soil on or near their bed. If you have a dog that doesn’t seem to care about keeping his bed clean then you can simply feed him a few meals on the bed and increase the value of the bed with this exercise.
